Signs of rodent activity
Note the rooms or outside areas involved and whether you have seen an animal as well as signs of activity. Noise in a roof space does not identify the species by itself. Keeping observations together helps an assessor decide where to look and what access may be needed.
Control for rats, mice and grey squirrels
Rat enquiries often involve gardens, kitchens or suspected routes around drains. Mouse enquiries commonly concern cupboards, stored food and connected indoor spaces. Grey squirrel enquiries focus on roof and loft access. Choose the closest situation, while leaving final identification open until the evidence supports it.
Food, shelter and recurring rodent activity
Repeated activity can involve more than the place where you first noticed it. Food storage, service openings, surrounding land or connected properties may need consideration. A sound proposal should explain the suspected source and what can actually be investigated, including inaccessible areas.
Rodent assessment, treatment and prevention
Control work and proofing have different purposes. One addresses current activity; the other tackles assessed entry routes. Ask how they should be sequenced, how progress will be checked and who is responsible for any repairs. Avoid closing suspected openings before the situation has been assessed.
Quotes for rodent control at your property
Tell the provider whether the property is a home, rental or business, and identify the affected spaces. Compare the assessment area, proposed control work, follow-up visits and proofing exclusions. A clearly scoped quote is more useful than a price that leaves those items uncertain.
Your questions answered
Can scratching identify the type of rodent?
No. Scratching can help locate activity but cannot reliably establish the animal involved. Sightings and other evidence need to be considered together.
Does a sighting outdoors mean there is an indoor infestation?
Not necessarily. Explain where you have seen activity and whether there are indoor signs so the enquiry covers the right areas.
Should entry gaps be closed before assessment?
Agree the timing with the assessor. Closing an opening without understanding current activity can complicate the work or leave other routes unaddressed.
